About the Hijri calendar
The Hijri (Islamic) calendar counts lunar months from the Prophet's migration to Madinah in 622 CE. Each month starts with the new crescent and lasts 29 or 30 days. Government services in Saudi Arabia historically used Hijri dates, so you may find them on older iqamas, contracts and birth certificates.
See today's Hijri date and the expected dates of Ramadan and Eid.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Gregorian date to Hijri?
Pick the date in the first box; the Hijri date appears straight away in English and Arabic. Use the second part to go from a Hijri date back to the Gregorian calendar.
Which Hijri calendar does the converter use?
The Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia that the UAE also follows. Switch to “India & Pakistan” for dates one day behind.
Can I convert a Hijri birth date or an old date?
Yes – the converter works for Hijri years 1356 to 1500 (1937 to 2077), which covers birth dates on old passports and documents.
